Libero Alyssa Rio returned to the lineup and helped the Ball State University women's volleyball team sweep Northern Illinois University in the Mid-American Conference opener Friday night at Worthen Arena.
The Cardinals cruised in the first set hitting a .360 clip as a team while holding the Huskies to a .133 attack percentage. Ball State was led by seniors Alisha Green and Julie Breivogel was a dominate 25-13 win.
Ball State had to work a little harder to take the second set. Challenged early by Northern Illinois, Ball State trailed 9-8. Trailing for the first time all night, the Cardinals went on a 12-2 run to take a commanding lead. Charde' Phillips notched a kill in clinching the set 25-15.
Out of the break Northern Illinois grabbed control with seven quick points, catching Ball State in a rotation in which ball handling wasn't the crispest it had been. The Cardinals rallied and put together a run to take a 10-9 lead and never looked back, winning 25-16 on a Green and Phillips block.
