University Program Board is giving underage students the opportunity to hear and enjoy local music.
Wired! will be held from 8 to 9 p.m. in the Student Center Tally. Admission is free.
The event began in February 2008 as a way to enjoy local music talent before the weekend. Most of the music performed at Wired! shows is acoustic and performers usually play solo acts, event coordinator Nick Hewitt said.
"We used to perform in Pruis Hall following UPB Movie Works," he said. "Now that the Student Center has opened back up, we will be performing at the Tally in order to gain a coffeehouse feel."
Most of the dining options will be shut down by this time, but the cashiers will still be working in order for students to purchase drinks and snacks, Hewitt said.
Wired! headliner and acoustic guitar player Phil Johnson, who has been playing for the last seven-and-a-half years, will be using a loop pedal for this opening performance.
"A loop pedal allows me to record something and then play it back through an amp," Johnson said. "It's nice to have when playing solo. You have more options."
Johnson is also a part of the band known as Mid-American and was found during the first Wired! mic night.
The band will also be playing in LaFollette Field on Sept. 25, he said.
Wired! is a large supporter of local music talent, Hewitt said. It not only nurtures local artists, but it gets their name out and provides a venue for them to perform, he said.
Johnson said he is glad to have another performance opportunity.
"I love performing," Johnson said. "I hardly ever get nervous, but rather get anxious waiting for performance time. I think the best part for this show will be how it's going full circle for me."
