Student Foundation sells $7,000 worth of Ball State football shirts

Students who own the popular "Chirp Chirp, the birds are back" T-shirt are showing school pride by not only supporting the Ball State University football team, but by supporting their fellow classmates.

Profits from the T-shirt sales go toward scholarships for Ball State students, including the James Marine Scholarship - which is $1,000 and awarded to an outstanding junior.

The Student Foundation, having a motto is students helping students, will sell the T-shirts throughout the football season before games in front of the Alumni Center and in the Atrium on weekdays. The T-shirts have been on sale for about two weeks and the foundation has already made about $7,000 in sales.

While the shirts may be the organization's most recognized fundraiser, it is not its only one.

Student foundation president Rachel Hemmelgarn said the organization is coming up with new ideas on how to raise money, including a cornhole tournament on Oct. 17 before the football game against Bowling Green State University.

"It will be on Family Weekend so we're hoping a lot of people will sign up," she said. "Hopefully [the cornhole tournament] will become an annual event."

Student Foundation advisor Don Park agrees.

"The winner will receive a $500 scholarship so hopefully a lot of people will signup," he said.

The tournament will be on the lawn at the Alumni Center. It will cost $10 to enter and people can sign up in the Advancement Office, by emailing the Student Foundation or by contacting a Student Foundation member.

In the almost 45 years of existence, the foundation has awarded about $600,000 in scholarship money.

Hemmelgarn said he encourages students to get involved and to apply to be part of the Student Foundation.

"Our motto is students helping students, and we're always looking for new members," she said.
