Despite earning their first win this season last Sunday, coach Michael Lovett and the soccer team are taking precautions not to become complacent for Friday's match against Lipscomb University.
The win gave the team a breath of relief, and the team morale has been positive this week in practice. That does not mean practices have not been competitive and intense, Lovett said.
"We have had tough and challenging practices this week," he said. "We can't be complacent from Sunday's win. We have to keep winning."
To the players, the win gives them new confidence for the remainder of the season. It also gives the team momentum heading into conference play.
"Preparing for Friday's game has been a lot easier this week coming off the win rather than another loss," freshman Brigit Reder said. "I'm expecting us to give it 110 percent, play all 90 minutes this weekend."
Lovett has his Cardinals working on finishing games and winning the in-air balls this week before practice.
"We used tennis balls [Wednesday] to help us work on winning balls out of the air and get our body positioning corrected," junior Jacki Eft said. "We have to be able to win those balls and be strong in the air."
The Cardinals expect to come out against the Bisons harder than they did Sunday. Lovett wants his team to score more and post a shutout victory, something they have yet to do this season.
"The entire team has to go into the match wanting to win again," Lovett said. "We want to go undefeated the rest of the season."
The Cardinals are in action Friday at home at 4 p.m. They will be going for their second consecutive victory and this is the final non-conference game for the team.
