OUR VIEW: Why not both?

AT ISSUE: The inaugural Homecoming flag football tournament replaced Music on McKinley in the lineup of Homecoming Week events

Students seem to enjoy the light-hearted spirit of flag football. Good call Homecoming Steering Committee.

You registered 16 teams for the Homecoming Co-ed Flag Football Tournament and hundreds more showed up to the preliminary and final rounds to watch their friends play.

For a first-year event it was pretty successful.

But, while the flag football tournament went well and everybody seemed to have a good time, there's no reason that you couldn't have organized both events. Football started at 7:30 p.m. If the committee kept Music on McKinley it could have started the event at 4:30 or 5 p.m. allowing time for 10 or 15 acts.

We aren't implying that organizing Music on McKinley would've been easy to add to the work load you have. Organizing the whole week would be tough for 16 students and four advisors. But why not increase your size and spread out the burden? The committee does a great job every year, but adding a few members could increase efficiency and make organizing another event doable.

Music on McKinley provided students with the chance to perform in front of their peers, which can be hard to come by for casual musicians in Muncie. It also gave greek and student organizations the opportunity to set up tables and advertise their groups while giving away free stuff.

The event lasted only three years. Students seemed to respond to it well. If money was a factor, you could have increased entry costs for the flag football tournament or Bed Races. The cost per person to play in the flag football tournament is $2.50. It's awesome of you to give us events like this that don't cost a lot, but $5 or $6 per person could have added a lot to the bank account. People would still sign up.

We also could have done without fireworks. It's always good to try something new, but fireworks are expensive and give us five or 10 minutes of entertainment at most. Music on McKinley, on the other hand, could've lasted a few hours.

Homecoming Week has been great through the halfway point, but the biggest events are still to come. Keep it up.
