The first home tournament of the season is in Mother Nature's hands. The Ball State Fall invitational is set for this weekend, but rain could cause some of the play unfinished.
"It would be a nightmare if it rains," coach Bill Richards said. "We would just have to sit and hope it clears up."
Play begins at 8:30 a.m. as 14 schools from the Midwest will be participating in individual tournaments.
Forecasts call for a chance of showers on Friday and thunderstorms on Saturday. With action going on all day Friday and Saturday, as well as half of Sunday, a shower could delay things to the point where the tournament doesn't finish on time or at all. The visiting teams need time to travel back Sunday for Monday classes, so there is not much flexibility in terms of delays.
Richards shot down the idea of moving the event to the indoor courts at the YMCA tennis center.
"There would be limited courts there," Richards said. "We are just going with the courts at Cardinal Creek and Lucinda."
Last year the tennis team had to find courts off campus at Yorktown High School for the invitational. This year all the matches will be played on campus.
"We just don't want to go off campus," Richards said. "It's more convenient."
As for the invitational itself, several NCAA Tournament teams will be competing in Muncie. The list includes Cleveland State University, Xavier University, DePaul University and the University of Louisville. Marquette University, which Ball State played last week, will also be at the invitational.
