Kelly Packard talks about the importance of having good relationships

Ball State University women's basketball Coach Kelly Packard said it is important to be truthful to maintain good relationships.

"Some of the hardest things we need to say are difficult, but completely necessary for the relationship to grow," she said.

By being truthful people in a relationship can share and benefit from each other's best qualities, she said.

Packard spoke about the rewards of having strong bonds with people at 7:30 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church. The church invited Packard to speak at its Festival of Faith presentation "Living the Winning Life."

Packard said communication is another key part in creating rewarding relationships. Bad communication can ruin relationships, she said. For example, gossip, although it causes no physical pain, can hurt people emotionally.

"Words are powerful and are used to build up, or can also be used to tear down," Packard said.

To maintain good relationships, she said friends should talk to each other about their problems.

Packard, who led the women's basketball team to win the MAC championship last year, said she coaches because of the rewarding relationships she has made.

"I coach for the passion I have to be a healthy leader, not perfect, but healthy," she said.
