This morning marks the second year that the bells of Shafer Tower will ring to commemorate the events of 9/11.
Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs Lynda Wiley said the idea to ring the bells came from a division of Student Affairs.
"The staff thought it was appropriate, and it was something the entire campus could participate in," she said.
The bells will ring every ten seconds from 9:45 a.m.- 10:00 a.m. Wiley said the university had estimated this to be a time of heavy traffic when a majority of students would be on campus. She also said this could be a time for students to reflect on the effects of the day.
Bells will also be sounding in other locations across the country this morning. At Trinity Church in New York City, bells will start to chime at 8:45 a.m., the time the twin towers were hit eight years ago. Bells will sound 3,017 times to recognize the number of people who died during the events of 9/11.
President Barack Obama recently passed a law marking today as a National Day of Public Service.
At Ball State University, Student Services is sponsoring many service opportunities throughout the day, which Wiley says are a way that "students can feel a sense of involvement."
"I feel like this event has really impacted today's students," Wiley said. "This has been such a big impact on their lives, and it's affected how they've grown up."
