Art Museum exhibit features small-scale sculptures

Art can take on many different forms and functions within museums and art galleries, as in the case with the Museum of Art's most recent showcase featuring artist and sculptor Jerald Jacquard.

The new exhibit, "Jerald Jacquard's Creative Process: Sculpture Projects 1999-2009," will be open to the public on Friday and will feature his works from the past 10 years.

"What is particularly unique about this new exhibit is that it will allow viewers to take in the process that is behind creating modern day sculptures within a smaller scale," Tania Said, the museum's curator of education, said.

Jacquard's work features maquettes, small-scale models or rough drafts of an unfinished sculpture used to visualize and test shapes and ideas without incurring the cost and effort of producing a full-scale product.

Jacquard said the exhibit will be not only dazzle its viewers, but it will also offer an interesting perspective on the actual process involved behind sculpting different works of art.

"The idea, simply put, is to think big but work small," he said.

Jacquard retired in 2000 as the head of the sculpture program at the Indiana University School of Fine Arts and began his initial career in a time that required artists to not only produce ideas by sketching and modeling them out, but also by constructing models using different methods such as carving, welding or casting molds.

These sculptures are similar to, if not the same, ones in his studio located in Bloomington, where he often constructs and creates visionary works.

"The new exhibit will focus on educating both students and individuals alike on the creative process involved within crafting and creating 20th century sculptures," Jacquard said.

Today the process is much different given the advances in both technology and the art industry. His work in the past has incorporated elements of both Cubism and Surrealism, which has become quite prevalent within modern art today, he said.

After viewing the exhibit, Ball State students will better understand the creative and sculpture production processes, Said said.

"It will in many ways emphasize both the direct and indirect processes involved in the actual design, construction and execution of Jerald Jacquard's sculptures," she said.
