Two Ball State University students were at Ball Memorial Hospital at 8:45 p.m. Thursday after they were struck by an SUV outside LaFollette Complex earlier that evening, freshman Ellie Howard said.
Howard said she and Caty Lykins, also a freshman, were walking back to their rooms in LaFollette after having dinner at Noyer Complex when a red Jeep Grand Cherokee hit them.
"It all happened really quick," Howard said. "We just kind of fell on the ground."
When she realized what had happened to her, Howard said she started "crying really hard," unlike Lykins.
"Caty was perfectly fine with the whole thing," Howard said. "She was just sitting there kind of dazed I guess."
Howard said Lykins hit her head during the accident, in addition to the bruises and "road burns" both women sustained.
"I'm really angry about the whole ordeal," she said. "We were like halfway across the road. We were in the crosswalk."
University Police officer Scott Stafford said a passerby who witnessed the accident made a call to UPD at about 5:55 p.m. Thursday and police arrived within a minute's time. A firetruck, ambulance and three police cars carrying five officers responded to the accident, he said. The ambulance transported the students to Ball Hospital.
At about 8:45 p.m. Howard said she and Lykins had recently been checked out of the hospital, but were still waiting to leave the building.
"We've been in this room for like three hours," she said. "Hopefully we can go home soon; we want to have some ice cream."
Both women called their parents about the accident. Howard said her parents, who live in St. Louis, were very concerned, and Lykins' parents asked if they needed to come get them at the hospital.
Stafford said he did not know the driver's name, but he was not given a citation. Police are still investigating the accident, he said.
