Parking Services expands commuter lot space

Another parking lot has been opened on Ball State University's campus to accommodate commuter students.

The new lot will be open at the corner of Ashland and Martin streets.

Nancy Wray, manager of the Office of Parking Services, said it isn't uncommon for lots to fill up quickly during the first few weeks of school when students are getting adjusted to their new schedules.

This year the problem was compounded by ongoing construction projects, such as the geothermal energy project. Part of the geothermal construction is being done on the north side of campus in a commuter lot beside Carmichael Hall.

Parking Services also lost some commuter parking spots near Noyer Complex, making the new lot necessary.

Wray said the new lot will be available for the rest of the 2009-2010 academic year and that the parking situation would be reassessed for the following school year.

The parking lot is expected to have about 70 parking spaces, Wray said. She also said there are still spaces available near Worthen Arena and the overflow lot by Scheumann Stadium

"We expect the new lot to hold approximately 70 cars," she said. "There are still spaces available near Worthen Arena and the overflow lot at the football stadium."

A shuttle will be available for students at McKinley and Ashland avenues to get them closer to campus.
