Professor bikes across Indiana

Event brings in about 1,300 from as far as Maryland to California

A Ball State professor put his endurance to the test Saturday as he biked 160 miles across Indiana.

Physical fitness instructor Seemann Baugh finished the Ride Across INdiana, or RAIN, event in 174th place with a time of 8 hours and 17 minutes. Baugh, who has participated in the event in past years, said this was his best time by 33 minutes.

Joe Anderson, one of the event organizers, said this ride, now in its 23rd year, was the best yet.

1,297 people participated in the ride - an increase of more than 100 people, Anderson said.

Anderson said that because of the economy, he expected to see a smaller turnout. But the mild, sunny weather was a key reason for the high number of participants, he added.

"We do it year after year hoping for weather like yesterday's," Anderson said Sunday evening.

RAIN is a 14-hour ride along Indiana's historic National Route 40. It is sponsored by the Bloomington Bicycle Club.

Most participants are "ordinary bike riders," Anderson said, who sign up to ride because they enjoy the sport.

This year riders came from as far east as Maryland and as far west as California.

Several other states, including Michigan and Florida, have similar bike rides, but Indiana's has been one of the most successful rides, Anderson said.

"It's been imitated," he said. "But we got a head start on it."
