Ball State proposes tuition increase for Fall Semester

Ball State suggests about 4% overall increase in rates this fall

Students will pay about $330 more for a Ball State University education next year if the Board of Trustees approves a proposed increase in tuition and fees.

Under the plan proposed by the university, tuition will increase by 3.26 percent, which is about $228 per year for in-state students. A new fee of $90 per year has also been proposed to pay for the Student Recreation and Wellness Facility set to open in 2010. The technology fee will increase by a proposed $11 per year, Vice President for Business Affairs Randy Howard said. Combined, the increases will be about 4.39 percent for in-state students.

"I know every dollar is important to students," Howard said, "but just like a consumer we see rising prices in health care for our employees, utility rate hikes and things of that nature. We did whatever we could to keep the increase as low as possible but still provide the quality, distinctive education we owe our students."

Ball State will hold the legally-required public hearing to discuss the proposed increase at 1 p.m. on July 20 in the Park Hall Multipurpose Room, Director of University Communications Kevin Burke said.

Members of the administration will present their proposal and get feedback at the hearing. They will then present their proposal to the Board of Trustees for approval.

The Board of Trustees will meet on July 24, where it is expected to make the final decision on tuition, fees and the budget for the next two years, Howard said.
