Applied Technology Building's roof replacement routine, but top-priority

A roof replacement at the Applied Technology Building won't affect use of the building.

Director of Engineering and Operations Jim Lowe said the project specifications call for the contractors to only remove as much of the roof as they can replace the same day.

He said the roof is a relatively small one and the project would likely be over quickly. According to the project award document, most of the project is supposed to be completed by Aug. 7.

Lowe said the university keeps structural elements like roofs in good working condition for as long as possible before replacing them. He said this is a standard project that is important for Ball State University.

"It's a pretty boring project," Lowe said, "but that's a good thing."

He said boring projects like this one are a top-priority for Ball State. He said that responsible ongoing maintenance of campus buildings protects the shells of the buildings to prevent more expensive repairs and replacements in the future.

Lowe said the new roof would have better insulation and be more reflective, making it more energy efficient.

According to the bid information, the project was initially expected to cost $256,000. Five companies entered bids ranging from about $190,000 to about $400,000. The project was awarded to low-bidder Nu-Tec Roofing Contractors and is now expected to cost $193,200, according to the award document.
