On a warm Friday evening, Muncie residents of all kinds came out to enjoy grilled food, cocktails and free music.
Downtown, between the Chase bank building and the Blue Bottle, a cozy, laid-back atmosphere came together for Freaky Tikki Friday as the sun dipped below Vera Mae's across the street. Local band Peterson, Simmons and Dunn filled the empty lot with the sounds of jazz: saxaphone, trumpet, trombone, flute, keyboard and bongo-type drums. The jam session included oldie hits like The Drifters "Under the Boardwalk" and The Wild Ones "Wild Thing." The tables brought out for the event filled quickly, leaving many to stand and sway to the beat.
Looking around, you'd see all types of people, from an older man in a straw hat smoking a pipe, to groups of 30-somethings celebrating a birthday, to college-age students relaxing with a beer, winding down at the end of the work week. Eventually, more tables had to be brought out to accommodate the number of people who showed up.
Pizza and alcohol was provided by Doc's Music Hall in a booth set up at the back of the gated area. Grilled food also available included smoked pork, chicken or smoked tofu with red potatoes and mustard greens or italian sausage with green peppers and onions.
From 7 to 11 p.m. every Friday night throughout the summer, Freaky Tikki Friday's will provide opportunities to kick back, relax and socialize right in the heart of downtown Muncie.
Admission is free for this 21 and over event, so don't waste any time getting down here for the next show on the 12th, when Doc Warner will play an acoustic blugrass and folk show.
