The Ball State University women's tennis team played its final home match of the season Saturday, and it ended just like the first one.
A 4-3 loss.
It was the Cardinals' fifth 4-3 defeat this season as Eastern Michigan University came out of Muncie with a win.
"We've been in a lot of matches like that where we haven't been able to close the door on them," coach Kathy Bull said. "We are playing hard, it's just that we can't quite finish things."
The Cardinals won No. 1 doubles as freshman Dena Boulieris and sophomore Georgina Thomson won with a tiebreaker of 8-7 (7-3). Eastern Michigan took the other two doubles matches by a combined score of 16-4, giving the Eagles an early lead.
Sophomore Hayley Hall and Thomson won their singles matches in straight sets with freshman Hanna Oman wining in three. The Eagles took the top three singles matches in straight sets, giving them the win.
"We didn't get the doubles point and came up pretty flat," Bull said. "Played really good singles at 4, 5 and 6. We had a couple of opportunities at 2 and 3 to get into a third set but came up short."
Bull said she thinks the Cardinals' main problem has been a lack of confidence.
"It's more of a psychological issue," Bull said. "We've got four rookies out there playing, and it's hard for them to get over the hump and learn about the MAC. I don't think there is any magic cure to it."
The Cardinals move to 5-11 on the season and 0-5 in league play. Ball State will get another chance to win its first MAC match this Friday at Bowling Green State University.
