Field trips, dishonesty on agenda

Minor changes to faculty and professional handbook proposed

Student field trips and academic dishonesty will be addressed during Thursday's University Senate meeting after the Senate Agenda Committee slated the issues for review Monday.

Brien Smith, Chairman of the Department of Marketing, said Campus Council meets Thursday and he plans to ask the committee if the pending items passed at the Campus Council meeting. He would cite them for the Senate if it said yes. That would save time because items from the Campus Council would have to wait until the Agenda Committee met again, he said.

One of the items included the addition to the campus' Academic Ethics Policy. The addition stated a student accused of academic dishonesty cannot bypass a failure in the course in which they are suspected of cheating in by dropping the class. According to the proposed addition, an instructor could submit a change of grade form to the Registrar to replace the student's W grade with an F grade.

The Committee's motion to change the Faculty and Professional Personnel Handbook's section on field trips was passed. The handbook will state that no field trips involving students that impact attendance in other classes can be scheduled during the first or last week of class and final examinations week. Exceptions will be granted only after approval is given from several administrators.

A number of other items that were brought forward for discussion by the Campus Council are pending items in the Senate. These items included minor changes to the Faculty handbook.
