Ex-student arrested on felony

Police: Man told clerk he had weapon, left with case of beer

A former Ball State University student remained in Delaware County Jail on Monday after an attempted armed robbery at a near-campus gas station, according to police reports.

Muncie police arrested Chadwic Spencer Nash, 20, and preliminarily charged him with armed robbery - a Class B felony - Sunday, according to the Muncie Police Department's probable cause affidavit for Nash's arrest.

The report states the following:

Muncie police received a call reporting a robbery from the Marathon gas station on the corner of Tillotson and Bethel avenues about 5:45 p.m. Sunday.

A man had picked up two cases of Budweiser beer and tried to walk out of the store with them. When the clerk said something, the man told the clerk he had a weapon, walked out and got into a silver Dodge Charger.

The clerk described the suspect to police, saying he was college-aged and wore a multi-colored hooded sweatshirt.

Police began searching the Ball State area, and found a silver Charger in front of a house on Neely Avenue. Police ran the plates and found it belonged to Nash.

Officers went to the front door of the house where they could hear yelling coming from inside.

When the officers knocked on the door, a woman, who was not identified in the report, said Nash was arguing with her roommate. The roommate, who also was not identified, came to the door and told police everything was OK, and she confirmed Nash owned the Dodge out front.

Officers went into the house and found Nash in the kitchen wearing the same outfit the clerk at the gas station described. Police put Nash in handcuffs and took him to the Marathon, where he was identified by the clerk.

Nash remained in Delaware County jail without bond as of Monday afternoon, jail officials said
