Although the Ball State University women's tennis team was in the warmth of the YMCA Tennis Center the frosty weather still affected their plans for Tuesday.
Multiple automobile accidents on Interstate-69 in southeastern Hamilton County left the Cardinals with only teammates looking across from the other side of the net, as their match against IUPUI was canceled due to the closing of the interstate prior to the match.
Indiana State Police reported that at least three people were killed and 11 injured in a pile-up involving a fire truck, five tractor trailers and 28 cars.
According to a statement from Ron Lipps, public information officer at the Fishers Fire Department, several people were trapped in their cars in the pile-up at mile marker 10 - near the Verizon Wireless Music Center exit. Stretches of the interstate remained closed for much of the evening as crews worked to free everyone from their vehicles and clean up the interstate.
The crash was one of dozens reported on a snowy February morning in Central Indiana.
Ball State remained on the courts to practice, despite the absence of the Jaguars. Coach Kathy Bull decided to turn the day into an intersquad scrimmage, which led to what she called an intense practice.
The match between IUPUI and Ball State has been tentatively rescheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday in Muncie. Bull said she has made arrangements to speak with officials from IUPUI around 10 a.m. to make sure the Jaguars will have the appropriate transportation, which will determine if the match will be played Thursday.
Ball State has lost two of its last three matches to open the spring season with its only win coming at home against Wright State University. The Cardinals have not played in a meet in 10 days, since it lost to Indiana University 7-0 on Jan. 25.
The Cardinals will not face any setbacks in terms of preparation, Bull said. The coach also said the delay should not have any effect on the outcome of the match.
"I don't think it has any effect on our end," Bull said. "We are just disappointed we didn't get to play them [Tuesday]. We're eager."
