WOMEN'S TENNIS: Ball State sweeps IUPUI off court

Cards even record at meet in Muncie after two-day delay

After waiting two more days to face off against the Jaguars of IUPUI because of a postponed match, the Ball State University women's tennis team rolled to its second victory of the season Thursday.

With the win, the Cardinals brought their season record back to .500.

"It's nice to be even at 2-2 going into the weekend," coach Kathy Bull said.

After a tough start in singles play, the Cardinals' No. 1 singles player - Sarah Hebble - bounced back from a 3-3 tie to claim the 6-3 win in the second set, capping off a 7-0 victory for Ball State.

The Cardinals played two doubles matches instead of three and won both.

Georgina Thomson and Dena Boulieris claimed the victory at the No. 1 doubles spot, while Hebble and Kylee Johnson took the prize at No. 2 doubles.

Boulieris also took home a singles victory at the No. 2 position. With Hayley Hall out of the lineup because of a pre-existing back injury for Ball State's match against the Jaguars, Johnson played and won the No. 3 spot. Thomson won at the No. 4 singles position. Rachel Surowiec picked up a win at No. 5 singles to finish a clean sweep of the Jaguars.

Despite not being pushed at times during the match, Bull said she was pleased with the Cardinals' performance.

"We did what we had to and got the job done," Bull said. "We needed to provide our own intensity at times."

Another aspect of the game that Bull said pleased her did not involve competition during the match against IUPUI. Freshman Hannah Oman practiced lightly during the match after being cleared to practice. Oman was benched because of a battle with mononucleosis, and Bull said Oman might be involved in the doubles lineup late next week.

"It was nice to see her back out there," Bull said. "I did not expect to have her back until Spring Break."
