WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Forward earns academic all-district honor

Ball State University women's basketball player Danielle Gratton was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District ballot Monday.

The junior forward will represent the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V Team along with Kelsey Luna from Indiana State University, Agnieszka Kulaga of Valparaiso University, Kristi Cirone of Illinois State University and Alyssa Karel from the University of Wisconsin. Gratton and the honorees will be eligible for Academic All-American honors.

Gratton averages 12.8 points per game and a team-high 7.2 rebounds per game. She has four double-doubles this year.

Gratton is in her first season playing for the Ball State women's basketball team. She sat out the 2007-08 season after she transferred to Ball State. She previously played two seasons with the University of Illinois.

As a communication major, Gratton has a 3.91 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Earlier this season, Gratton was named Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week.

To be eligible for the ballot, a student must obtain a 3.2 cumulative GPA and be at least a sophomore. The women's basketball Academic All-American team will be announced later this year.

Ball State, which leads the MAC West with a 17-8 overall record and 9-2 MAC record, will play at Central Michigan University on Sunday.
