WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards can't fly with Falcons, lose by 9 points

BSU high shooting not enough to beat MAC East leaders

The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team continues its dominance, this time against Ball State University beating the Cardinals 76-67.

The Cardinals (14-8, 6-2 MAC) fouled the Falcons 23 times, sending Bowling Green (19-2, 8-0 MAC) to the free throw line 34 times where they made 32 free throws. The Falcons did not miss a free throw in the first half.

Although the Cardinals shot a higher percent from the field and behind the arc, and out rebounded the Falcons 44-30, the Falcons balanced offense outlasted the Cardinals run-and-gun style of play.

Four of the five Falcons starters scored double-digits, and had 17 points from their reserves. Bowling Green also outscored Ball State on the fast break 11-0.

The Mid-American Conference Players of the Week, Ball State's Danielle Gratton and Bowling Green's Tracy Pontius each had double digit points. Gratton scored 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Pontius had a team-high 15 points, five assists and five rebounds.

Ball State's guard Porchia Green scored nine points. Green also had seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Guard Audrey McDonald was 1-6 from the floor, scoring a season-low three points in 29 minutes of play.

Midway through the second half McDonald made contact with a Bowling Green player and hit her head on the court. She was removed to the locker room and did not play in the rest of the game.

Ball State's Emily Maggert lead all scorers with 18 points, and rounded out a double-double with 10 rebounds.

The Cardinals never led in the game, and were down by as many as 16 in the second half. Ball State had 21 turnovers, which accounted for 22 Bowling Green points.

The Cardinals next travel to Buffalo, N.Y., to face the University at Buffalo Bulls at 2 p.m. Sunday.
