TRACK AND FIELD: Williams wins weekly MAC award again

Ball State University track and field athlete Amber Williams was named the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track Athlete of the Week Wednesday.

Williams provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet in the 60-meter hurdles at the Ball State Quadrangular on Friday with a winning time of 8.29 seconds. It was the second time in her career she provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet in the event.

She also won the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.45 seconds, which was .01 seconds shy of an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. The senior finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.22 seconds at the home meet.

Ball State competed against Miami University, Northern Illinois University and Western Michigan University at the Ball State Quadrangular. Ball State finished second in the meet behind Western Michigan.

Wednesday marked the second time in the last three weeks Williams won the MAC's weekly award.

The fifth-year senior from Fort Wayne won the award on Feb. 11, after her performance at the University of Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational, in which she had two conference-best times. The 2007 NCAA All-American was the first MAC track athlete to win the award twice this season.

It was the fourth time in her career she won the honor. She redshirted during the 2008 season to attempt to make the United States roster for the 2008 Summer Olympics. She finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles at the USA Track & Field Indoor Championships.

Williams and the rest of the Cardinals will continue their season at the 2009 MAC Indoor Track & Field Championships beginning Friday in Kent, Ohio. The meet begins at 10 a.m. and continues Saturday.
