RHA, SGA discuss closer relationship

Possible partnership to work toward each organization's goals

Student Government Association will partner with Residence Hall Association today to address two Campus Alliance platform points and other issues expressed by SGA's on-campus caucus.

In order to facilitate the potential alliance, Vice President Carrie Cozad said assistant director of Housing and Residence Life Stacy Said would visit SGA's meeting today to discuss ways to effectively work together with RHA, which her department oversees.

Cozad said such a coalition would help SGA computerize each resident hall's night security system - thus eliminating guests from filling out the standard yellow forms. She said she hoped the working relationship would help SGA increase operation hours for the residence hall fitness rooms.

President Pro-Tempore Jimmy Farow will speak at RHA's Issues and Facilities committee meeting tonight, where he will discuss ways to make the two platform points a reality. Cozad said the pieces should be in place to allow RHA and SGA to effectively work together afterward.

"Now that we have a couple meetings set up, I think (RHA) will be willing to work with us now that we're on the same page," Cozad said. "We've been trying to get a hold of them, and once we meet face-to-face and set everything up, I think it'll be pretty easy."

SGA also will review the appointment of sophomore Eric McCoy to the University Review Board. If approved, McCoy would serve on the five-person panel that oversees SGA's Executive Board and any Ball State judicial hearings.

The meeting will adjourn early to make time for an SGA Valentine's Day social.

President Frank Hood said before taking office, SGA meetings typically had a somber tone and stringent dress code in place. He said senators rarely spoke to colleagues outside their respective caucuses and committees, which is why he advocated social events.

"There was really no interaction among the senators," Hood said. "We decided we wanted to lighten everything up, and have it where people would have a chance to go and have a good time, hang out and get to know everyone else in the organization."

The meeting will take place in Cardinal Hall at the Student Center at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday. It will mark the final meeting before SGA's nomination convention 7 p.m. Monday.
