OUR VIEW: Now hear this

AT ISSUE: Students need to take advantage of blossoming Muncie music scene, enjoy and support it while on campus to encourage future growth

Thumping bass, dancing college students, laughter and screams fill the air.

This is something that can't be experienced in the land of ear buds. However, be warned live music performances have been known to prompt feelings of happiness, excitement and overall joy in life.

Muncie is often judged too harshly by those who don't have the time, energy or ambition to peel back the layer of vacant factory buildings and pothole-ridden roads.

Intertwined with the potholes is a budding music scene full of experiences yet to be had.

Mike Martin, owner of Doc's Music Hall, said he sees potential for Muncie to become a thriving epicenter of live, local music performances.

While we wait for that to happen, students should still take advantage of the music scene that's beginning to blossom.

The Doc's extension in the Village gives students easy access to live music and we should start taking advantage of it.

The Living Room also offers live music experiences.

If nothing else, Ball State University has several band and choir groups that perform for free or at relatively low cost for students to attend.

There are dozens of musical genres and people should experiment with as many varieties as possible.

Ruckus provided students with a free, legal avenue to pursue new music. Now that it's gone, students should continue branching out and sampling new bands and styles.

The scene is starting to develop, and we should work to keep it going so we can have something fun to do on the weekends.

Students have already taken an initiative and tried to rejuvenate the scene with the Wuhnurth music festival in September and last April's Live at the Waterbowl.

Let's take the next step in growing a Muncie music scene and show up for concerts, free or otherwise.

It seems as if there are more options of weekend activities in Muncie than we thought.

What a pleasant surprise.
