MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Reporter's notebook

Below are some notes about the No. 13 Ball State University men's volleyball team. The Cardinals will play George Mason University at 7:30 p.m. at Worthen Arena.

George Mason's left outside attackers Kyle Gramit and Brandon McLaughlin led the Patriots in kills per game average. Gramit, a 2008 second team All-American, is averaging a team-high 4.36 kills per game. Coach Joel Walton said George Mason sets most of its balls to the left side.

Recent series historyIn the last two seasons, the teams have split their season series both times. George Mason won the last match against Ball State in four-games during the 2008 season.

Setter Ethan Pheister's health Coach Joel Walton said Wednesday that starting setter Ethan Pheister has been sick the last few days. Pheister also did not attend Wednesday's practice because of his illness. The junior is averaging 12.64 assists per game - the second most in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association.

Dominic SpadavecchioAfter a career-high nine kills in Ball State's match against Lewis, outside attacker Dominic Spadavecchio said Wednesday that he is feeling more comfortable in the starting lineup. Spadavecchio, a redshirt freshman, has started the last two matches at the left outside attacker position.
