MEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals sweep Flyers without Bussert

The Ball State University men's tennis team pounced on the University of Dayton from start to finish, resulting in a 7-0 victory on Saturday.

"It was a match where we knew we were heavy favorites based on personnel," coach Bill Richards said. "As far as we want to get out of it, it's just about trying to get better. It's an individual thing. Every guy on our team has things that they need to keep working on and get better at."

The Cardinals set the tone early by sweeping the three doubles matches. Seniors Jose Perdomo and Jorge Rodriguez won their doubles match 8-3. Sophomore Eduardo Pavia with freshmen Andres Monroy cruised to an 8-4 victory. The freshman tandem Jon Wegener and Derek Carpenter won 8-4 as well.

Carpenter filled in for sophomore Shaun Bussert, who injured his knee during last week's loss to the University of Michigan. He's scheduled for an MRI on Today.

"He's one of our regulars," Richards said. "We're playing people that might not be in there. We're very deep. We have 10 guys. We're certainly a better team with Shaun in the lineup than without him, but we do have a lot of depth and a lot of options."

Ball State went on to sweep all six singles matches in straight sets. The most decisive victory was Rodriguez's 6-0, 6-0 victory in No. 3 singles.

Freshman Cliff Morrison, who joined the team last month from South Africa, won his second singles match 6-3, 6-1.

"College tennis a lot different," Morrison said. "It's more about the vibe of the team than it is in South Africa where it's all individual."

The Cardinals improved to 2-2 on the year and 2-0 at home. Dayton is still winless at 0-2.

Ball State will have two home matches next weekend starting with IUPUI on Saturday.
