MEN'S TENNIS: Ball State deals with extra-strenuous schedule

When coach Bill Richards made his schedule during the summer, he was well aware of the challenge he was giving his team this week.

For the first time this season, the Ball State University men's tennis team will play match on back-to-back days this weekend.

"There are definitely some physical challenges," coach Bill Richards said. "With scheduling, you just have to take the situations you get. The players should get some conditioning out of it, and that will help down the road."

Ball State will play consecutive home matches this weekend starting with IUPUI at 1 p.m. Saturday, followed by the University of Detroit Mercy at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Ball State enters the weekend after its 7-0 victory against the University of Dayton on Saturday. The Cardinals are 2-2 on the year with both victories coming at home.

Record-wise Ball State is a heavy favorite to win both matches. IUPUI is 0-5 on the year with three of its losses being 0-7 shutouts.

Detroit Mercy is 1-3 on the season with two of its losses coming at the hands of Mid-American Conference schools. It's one victory came Jan. 25 as a 4-3 win against Youngstown State University.

Ball State will get some added depth as sophomore Shaun Bussert looks to return to the lineup. Bussert injured his knee on Jan. 24, but his MRI Monday came back negative, and he is expected to see some playing time this weekend.

"We got some guys nicked up," Richards said. "But we have 10 guys. We have depth, so we should be good to go."
