"Don Giovanni," one of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's most prestigious operas, will be performed by the Ball State University Opera Theatre this weekend.
"Il Dissoluto Punito," "The Unrepented Rake" is the long name used back in the time Mozart created the opera, assistant professor of voice Joseph Levitt said.
"Don Giovanni is the Italian name for Don Juan," he said. "The greatest lover in history, after Cassanova."
Levitt is also the Ball State Opera Theatre stage director. "Don Giovanni" is his fourth main stage production with Ball State.
The story opens early morning. Don Giovanni is trying to seduce Donna Anna, the daughter of the well-known Comanantore, who resists. As Don Giovanni tries to escape, the Comandatore confronts him and get killed in the in duel. Through the development of the story, three of Don Giovanni's conquests will want revenge.
"Here in Ball State we have a high-quality opera program" Levitt said. "We present productions in the original language, full costumes, full set, full orchestra that people in Muncie don't get a chance to see. This is a great opportunity"
