Indianapolis Colts defensive captain Gary Brackett has been through high and low experiences on and off the field, many of which have taught him how to overcome adversity.
Brackett will speak Monday night at Pruis Hall on the hardships he has faced throughout his 28 years of life. The event begins at 7 p.m. and is co-sponsored by Student Life and the Multicultural Center.
In his personal life, Gary Brackett's IMPACT Foundation is the middle linebacker's way of giving back.
According to the organization's Web site, www.garybrackett.org, the mission of the foundation is "to provide opportunities and resources to children affected by cancer."
The site also states that the charity portion of the organization goes towards providing interactive programs and resources to directly benefit those children and their families. Brackett hopes that through each of their three programs, they can reach over 75,000 children by 2010.
The Colts captain has learned how to handle adversity in his life. Brackett's mother, father and brother died within a 16-month period when he was beginning a career in professional football. On the field, Brackett has experienced the low of not being drafted and the high of a Super Bowl win in 2006 against the Chicago Bears.
Last season, Brackett was ranked third on the team with 113 tackles, 62 of which were solo. A leg injury at Cleveland put him on the inactive list on Nov. 30, causing him to miss the final four games of the season and the Wild Card playoff game at San Diego.
