WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Playing for perfection

BSU, UT enter game undefeated in league, leading MAC West

The Ball State University women's basketball team will look to extend its perfect Mid-American Conference record against another undefeated MAC team Saturday.

The Ball State women's basketball team will play the University of Toledo at 1 p.m. Saturday at Worthen Arena.

Ball State is 10-6 with a 3-0 record against MAC competition while Toledo is 9-7 and is also 3-0 in MAC play.

Coach Kelly Packard said her team has a chance to win its fourth straight MAC game and achieve "something special down here."

"We need to be opportunists," she said. "We need to see that as the opportunity it is and not let it get away from us."

The Cardinals' first-year coach said to have a schedule where the first three out of four MAC games at home is great for her team.

Ball State began MAC play Jan. 7 with a 62-55 win against Eastern Michigan University at Worthen Arena. The Cardinals then beat Western Michigan University 70-67 on the road and then Central Michigan University 83-75 at home Wednesday.

Toledo is coming off a 80-67 win at Eastern Michigan Wednesday. Toledo also beat Western Michigan 69-64 and Northern Illinois University 78-66 in conference play this season.

With their undefeated records, Ball State and Toledo enter their game as the top two teams in the MAC West. The teams are tied with Bowling Green State University for the best MAC record.

Toledo leads the overall series against Ball State 43-15. The Rockets beat the Cardinals last season 65-60.

Packard said Toledo, which finished 14-16 overall and 5-10 in the MAC last season, is an improved team with a talented new coach in Tricia Cullop.

"We definitely need to get after it, get to business," she said.
