Students slow down for snow day

Normally busy locations vacant because of weather

There was supposed to be a rush at about 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the Barnes and Noble Cafe.

Instead, the student hot spot was empty. Its seats were as vacant as the classes on campus.

Ball State University canceled classes after more than 10 inches of snow fell on central Indiana early Wednesday morning, according campus-wide e-mails and text messages sent out by Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications Tony Proudfoot. The University's last snow day came on Feb. 13, 2007, according to an article by the Ball State Daily News.

But that didn't stop Ball State student Cody Kravis, who works the Cafe, from getting to work on time -- sort of.

"I got here at 7:30 a.m. when I was supposed to get here at 7 a.m.," Kravis said. "Considering the conditions, I think that's excusable."

Kravis said he was helping to serve the normal 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. rush, when he noticed three students towards the back of the cafe get a text message and the announcement came over the radio. The announcement came after 8 a.m. classes were already in session, he said.

"They just got this bad look on their face," Kravis said. "That look basically said 'aw, come on!'"

Roommates Andrew Smole and Justin Smith were forced to eat in the Atrium after snow-covered roads prevented them from getting their intended treat -- a McDonald's breakfast.

Smole said he and his roommate live on Janney Street, more than three blocks off of campus, and after looking at the blanket of snow, the two business majors decided it was not worth the trip.

"I haven't had McDonald's breakfast in a really long time," Smith said as he stared down his Sbarro pizza. "I guess I just really wanted some today."
