Recruitment begins today

Sororities start week of events 'more open' than Fall activities

Informal Sorority Recruitment starts today and will have activities for women interested in joining sororities all week.

The events are open to any female students who did not complete Fall recruitment or who want to join a sorority, said Jennifer Eakins, Panhellenic Council vice president of public relations and Phi Mu fraternity pledge educator.

Eakins said the week's events will be informal and women should dress casual. She said Spring recruitment is similar to the partially structured Fall recruitment in that women won't be pressured to join a specific sorority. Unlike Fall recruitment, however, women can choose who they want to visit and what activities to participate in, Eakins said. During Fall recruitment, women must visit all sororities and have planned activities they must attend.

"Spring has always been open," Eakins said. "We have rules to abide by from the national chapters."

Eakins said mandated silence has been relaxed because of the negative feelings it caused in the past. Before, sorority members were not able to speak to any recruit, Eakins said. That caused many recruits to think the members felt they were better or above them. Members are now allowed to talk to recruits about anything except sorority-related issues, Eakins said.

Eakins said each sorority has their own night of alcohol-free activities.

"You should go to see what greek is about," Eakins said. "To see what greek is like and to see the house or suite."

Phi Mu recruitment director, Maricia Quesada, said her sorority wasn't the stereotypical sorority.

"We are goal-oriented and respectful to anyone who wants to come out," Quesada said.

Women should come out if they want to make friends with about 70 other women and enjoy sisterhood, she said.

Fliers will be passed out at meetings and throughout the week in the Atrium.

"They can ask questions about anything from financial to philanthropy to formals." Eakins said. "They can ask any question."
