One day before playing the No. 13 Ball State University men's volleyball team, No. 4 Stanford University got another win against a nationally ranked team.
Stanford swept No. 14 Ohio State University 30-28, 30-26, 36-34 on Friday in Columbus, Ohio, for its third win against a top 15 ranked team in less than two weeks.
Stanford (4-1, 1-0 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) had two players with more than 10 kills, including outside attacker Evan Romero who had a match-high 17 kills. This was the consecutive match Romero has led the Cardinal in kills.
Coach John Kosty said in an interview prior to the match that Romero has played well for the team this season and is continuing to improve as an opposite outsider attacker.
The Cardinal outhit the Buckeyes .294 to .287 and had 57 kills - four more than Ohio State.
Ohio State, the defending Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association champions, has now lost its first four matches - all to nationally ranked teams. This was also the Buckeyes sixth loss to ranked team from the West Coast in the last two seasons.
With this win, Stanford will travel west to play Ball State at 7:30 p.m. in Worthen Arena.
Coach Joel Walton said Wednesday that he was planning to attend the Stanford Ohio State match to watch Stanford before it plays in Ball State's season opener. He also said he would with the Cardinals before Saturday's match to discuss what he learned from the Ohio State match.
