GYMNASTICS: Cards beat Penn in season opener

For the first time in her Ball State University gymnastic coaching career Nadalie Walsh has a winning record.

Ball State won all four events as it defeated the University of Pennsylvania 190.725 to 184.350 in its season opener Friday in Philadelphia.

This was Ball State's second win since Walsh became the head coach in August 2007. During her first season, Ball State lost its first eight meets.

The Cardinals won each event by at least one point.

Senior Teresa Phipps scored a 38.325 in the all-around to win by 0.675 points. She also finished in first place in the balance beam.

Along with Phipps, freshman Nicki Sleeper scored a 9.95 in her first attempt on the vault as she won the event averaging a 9.875.
