Fraternity recruitment starts up

Traditions become focus as anniversary of greek life approaches

Campus fraternities are kicking off Spring Informal Recruitment with their own Super Bowl parties Sunday.

Spring recruitment will run through Friday, Cory Schneider Interfraternity Council vice president of public relations, said.

"Each man can come and go as they want, where they want," said Schneider, who is also a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.

Schneider said recruitment numbers were generally fewer in the spring. However last spring there was a spike in numbers. He said the increase was very encouraging.

Brandon Clymer, vice president of Interfraternity Council recruitment and Delta Tau Delta fraternity member, said the events held during the week are more about the men getting to know each other and hanging out. Spring weather allows for more sports and outside activities to become available, as well as cookouts and game nights, Clymer added.

"Everyone has different events planned," Clymer said. "It'll be a lot of food, hanging out and entertainment."

Schneider encouraged every interested man to come out.

"There's no commitment, especially in spring with smaller crowds," Schneider said. "Come see the houses and make whatever decision is best for you."

When advertising for spring recruitment, fraternities wanted to highlight certain pride points, Schneider said. He said grades, retention rates, community service and philanthropy all increased with fraternities. Fraternities wanted to get back to their traditions because 2009 is the 90th anniversary for greek life on Ball State University's campus, Schneider said.

"The numbers speak for themselves," Schneider said. "It's not something everyone wants to do and we realize it's not for everyone."

Clymer added recruitment standards have changed and are now 365 days a year. A new point system will be implemented as a way to grade potential members, Clymer said.

Schneider said the point system will be taught February 22 at an all-greek conference called "Phired Up." The conference will be held to teach greek members about good recruitment processes, he said.

Clymer said events were pushed back to later in the week to allow men to attend house tours. The tours will begin Monday in the dorms at 4:45 p.m. Potential recruits will be greeted by recruitment chairs and head to Bracken Library to meet other members for short presentations at 5 p.m.
