Ease the job search

Spring Semester to have normal number of job fairs despite ailing economy

Students feeling discouraged by the economic situation can be comforted that Ball State University will have the same number of job fairs available to help them find jobs this spring as in previous semesters.

James Mitchell, assistant director of the Career Center, said employers would still be looking at Ball State for candidates despite the recession.

"Although employment rates have been reduced over the last months, there still is 40 percent of employers looking to offer a job to students," he said.

The Career Center had a Job Fair Jump-Start presentation Tuesday at Bracken Library to prepare students for the semester's job fairs. Mitchell gave advice to students on how to present themselves to employers at fairs. It was the first in a series of presentations to assist students in their preparations for job fairs.

During the presentation students asked how to prepare résumés and what to do in interviews, among other things.

Sophomore architecture major Anne Schnitzenbaumer has been searching for a job since before Winter Break. She said the presentation gave her insight to what she would face in her search.

Mitchell said that while job fairs will continue to organize at Ball State despite the economic situation, employers might change how they present themselves and the positions they offer.

He said important parts of the job search are preparedness and confidence.

"College students should be paying attention to the situation, and they should take steps to start preparing now to stand out from the crowd of people," he said.
