As the snow kept falling, Ron Ball kept plowing.
The Muncie Street Department maintainace supervisor started working the streets at 5 a.m., just "pushing the snow around," he said.
However, as Ball looked outside his front windshield at 1 p.m., he seemed relieved.
"[The cleanup] is going great," Ball said. "We were just waiting for the snow to quit, and it finally did. The roads are finally starting to melt and I think [the street department workers] should be able to go home by 3 p.m."
Kevin Kenyon, associate vice president of facilities planning & management, said the cleanup is going well and the Ball State University crews are getting caught up.
A report from the National Weather Service in Indianapolis indicated Muncie received 12.8 inches of snow from late Monday night through the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Meteorologist Logan Johnson from the National Weather Service described the storm front that moved through the area as "large and complex."
On Tuesday night, snow accumulated at a rate of one inch per hour, resulting in the cancellation of Wednesday classes. The last time classes were canceled was on February 13, 2007.
Johnson said the two-day total of the Feb. 13 and 14 was 16.5 inches.
Muncie isn't expected to reach that total this time, he said. A weak system will move through tomorrow, producing flurries, but nothing significant, Johnson added.
Ball said it is Muncie Street Department's policy to plow and salt main roads on the first day of snowfall and get to neighborhoods on the second day of a major snowfall.
The department cannot put down salt on every street in one day because of time and supply restraints, he said. Since his 10-year tenure with the Muncie Street Department, Ball said he has never known the department to salt secondary streets.
"I think we're doing better than Indy at this point," Ball said. "Indy has 75 trucks in two shifts and they are having trouble with it. In my opinion, we're doing a great job."
