Moving to the right outside attacker position was not a problem in the preseason for Todd Chamberlain.
Chamberlain had a match-high 28 kills as the Ball State University men's volleyball team defeated Ohio State University 30-25, 24-30, 30-27, 28-30, 15-13 in an exhibition match on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio.
Coach Joel Walton said Chamberlain performed well against the Buckeyes.
"His blocking and attacking gives us a nice punch and forces teams to respect that side of the court," Walton said.
Playing as a left outside attacker last season, Chamberlain was named to the second team All-Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and was 10th in the conference averaging 3.2 kills per game.Prior to playing the Buckeyes, Chamberlain also had a match-high 17 kills in a sweep against Lewis University on Saturday in Columbus.
Walton said Chamberlain will start the season as the right outside attacker. He also said he wants to see Chamberlain to continue to improve throughout the season.Along with Chamberlain, three Ball State players had at least 10 kills in the match, including Marcus Imwalle who had 17 kills.
"Todd and Marcus provide us with a one-two punch and can put up big numbers," Walton said. "We want to be able to spread out our offense."
This was the final preseason matches for Ball State. It was also the first time the Cardinals played the Buckeyes since being swept in the MIVA Tournament championship match in May.
Ball State will open the season against Stanford University on Jan. 17 at Worthen Arena.
Walton said the preseason was successful for the Cardinals. He said he has not yet finalized his starting lineup for Ball State's opening match.
"There is a lot of competition," Walton said. "We've got some nice options."
