FOOTBALL: Agent says Hoke's decision to stay or leave Ball State to come by Monday

Nate Davis confirms team meeting scheduled for Monday morning

Ball State football coach Brady Hoke's agent neither confirm or deny an ESPN.com report Sunday night stating San Diego State is prepared to name Hoke the school's next head football coach.

Aztecs athletics director Jeff Schemmel interviewed Hoke this week in San Diego about becoming the next head football coach of a program that finished this season 2-10. Hoke's agent, Trace Armstrong, gave his word to both schools that he will not speak on the matter, he said, but he expects a decision by Monday afternoon.

"I'm really going to let things unfold," Armstrong said. "I expect things to unfold quickly, I'd say within the next several hours."

Two phone calls put into Hoke have been unreturned as of 7:15 p.m. Sunday night.

Ball State junior quarterback Nate Davis said Hoke called him earlier Sunday evening, and the coach has a team meeting schedule for Monday morning to address his coaching status. Davis said Hoke failed to say whether he will accept a coaching offer from San Diego State or staying at Ball State next season.

Davis said Friday he spoke with Hoke earlier last week and was told the coach planned to stay at Ball State next season. Davis declined to say Sunday whether he thought Hoke would go to San Diego State.

His older brother, Jose Davis, said Sunday night Davis was less convinced Hoke would be at Ball State next season.

"His attitude (in regards to Hoke staying) has changed," Jose said. "He thinks the odds are a lot higher now that Brady will leave."

Davis, who finished eighth in voting for the Heisman Trophy on Saturday, said he would stay in Muncie immediately following Ball State's loss to Buffalo in the Mid-American Conference Championship Game on Dec. 5. He said Friday, however, he is thinking about entering his name into this year's NFL Draft. He said he will not make a decision until discussing his options with his family and coaches during Christmas Break.

If Hoke accepts an offer from San Diego State, Jose said, it will increase the likelihood his younger brother enters this year's NFL Draft.

"I think there's a 95 percent chance he goes (to the NFL) now," Jose said.

Hoke was at Ball State football's awards banquet earlier Sunday. The event began at 2:00 p.m. at the Horizon Convention Center in downtown Muncie and ended at about 5:15 p.m. Hoke said nothing about his job status - at either Ball State or San Diego State - during the banquet.

Hoke has a 34-38 record as a head coach in his six seasons at Ball State. However, he's 19-7 in the past two seasons and led the Cardinals to two West Division titles and two bowl games.
