Joyce DeWitt told a crowd of more than 250 people there has never been a more important time for artists than now.
DeWitt, one of the stars of the sitcom "Three's Company" and a Ball State University alumna, took the stage of the University Theatre Monday night to take part in a question and answer forum with the audience.
She offered insights on the success of "Three's Company", working with John Ritter and her family origins. She also talked about the artistry of acting, the challenges of film and theatre, her memories at Ball State and the importance of laughter and self confidence.
"Through laughter, our heart opens," DeWitt said. "At the center of the universe is the sound of laughter."
Nick Berman, a sophomore theatre studies major, said he found her words to be very inspirational.
"She gave us a new insight into acting as an art form," Berman said. "She brought us to her level and was very personable."
During her time at Ball State DeWitt was a member of the Chi Omega sorority.
Shortly before DeWitt finished speaking, Abby Foltz, president of Chi Omega, presented DeWitt with a photo composite of her and her sorority sisters.
After answering a few final questions, DeWitt took time to take pictures and sign autographs for fans in the audience.
DeWitt left the theatre with a message for not only actors, but all people.
"Love yourself, trust yourself, don't judge yourself." DeWitt said. "You can't miss your own destiny."
