The risk of getting a ticket for using the Amelia T. Wood Health Center ended Thursday after the university began a new parking policy.
Students needing to use the Health Center will get a three-hour parking pass upon signing in with the nurses, said Kenzie Grob, Health Center public relations student employee.
"If it expires, then Parking Services has to check the wait time with the nurse before issuing a ticket," Grob said, "but if the student comes in for a shot or something and leaves to go to class, then the student will receive a ticket for abusing the lot."
Kent Bullis, medical director and physician at the Health Center, was working with Parking Services because there was a lack of parking for students and faculty, Grob said.
"They were being issued tickets, sometimes daily," she said.
Kent Bullis said Gene Burton, director of public safety, talked to the upper management at Parking Services and as a group, Administration and Parking Services came up with a solution.
"From my perspective, the main downside is there will be a small percentage of students that feel so bad they won't want to go to their car," Bullis said.
He said the positive of the new policy would lead to less abuse of the Health Center lot.
"It was not uncommon for me to come back from lunch and see someone get out of their car in workout clothes and go to Irving Gym," Bullis said. "This is a great solution to make it easier for Parking Services to enforce consistently, but still be friendly to students who are needing places to park for our services."
Burton said he met with Parking Services because there were concerns and problems for patients parking at the Health Center.
"We are confident that this should correct the problems that were happening and make it easier for the patients," Burton said.
