Facebook group begins beard-off

Students stay away from razors during No Shave November

November is time for cool weather, fall colors, Thanksgiving and beards.

No Shave November has swept Ball State University's campus this year with help from a Facebook group promoting the event.

Freshman Brad Stark is the administrator for the online group. He said the idea for promoting No Shave November came from a high school tradition between himself and friends. When Stark moved on to college, he decided to bring the tradition along with him.

The rules are pretty simple: don't shave all month. This means no trimming either, unless it's a necessity. At the end of the month, members of the Facebook group will post pictures of their mangy facial hair on the Web site.

"It will be fun to see all my friends with big, gross beards," Stark said.

Freshman travel and tourism major Mike Fisch helped get the word out about Stark's group. He said so far, more than 100 people from Ball State have joined the Facebook group.

"I think it's caught on because it's something different to do," Fisch said. "It's college so it doesn't really matter what we do or what we look like."

There are variations to the event that is rebelling against hygiene and grooming. Some participants turn the event into a bet among friends, pooling money and giving the man with the most hair the grand prize. The use of hair growth products is discouraged when the event is converted into a competition.

Fisch said women aren't excluded from the fun, but usually opt out of participating.

For people who missed out on No Shave November, don't worry. There's always Febru-hairy, where the same basic rules apply.
