College's numbers increasing

College of Applied Sciences and Technology's enrollment increases 18% since 2002

With a student fashion show in the works and an internship at J.C. Penney, Lindsey Holloway said she has spent more time learning out in the job field than in the classroom.

Holloway is a senior fashion merchandising major in the College of Applied Sciences and Technology.

With more than 2,800 students enrolled, the College of Applied Sciences and Technology has become the second largest college at Ball State University.

College Dean Mitchell Whaley said the increase in student size over the past six years is because of the impressive faculty and classes focused on immersive learning.

"All of our programs have laboratory-based experience and internships that focus on learning through practice," Whaley said. "Our students are not just sitting in a classroom for four years."

Whaley said the construction management program was a perfect example of learning through practice. The major puts interns on the job site where they orchestrate an entire construction project, he said.

The College of Applied Sciences and Technology is composed of traditional programs such as nursing, new programs such as the coaching master's online program and re-purposed programs such as hospitality and food management. The hospitality and food management program went through several changes over the past few years, including a name change and additional courses, Whaley said.

One of the new courses addresses event management, which includes internships in the hotel, theme park and restaurant industries.

It is these changes in course work and the job availability upon graduation that have caused the number of students majoring in programs in the College of Applied Sciences and Technology to increase by 18 percent since 2002, Whaley said.

"We are getting students out in the field, and we are finding them jobs," he said.
