After months of research and investigation, Dean of Students Karl Beeler announced the candidates for the director of Ball State University's Multicultural Center.
Beeler said he had two candidates, Patricia Lovett and S.G. Carthell. He said he would hold an open forum for each of them as the last step in the interview process.
Four months have passed since Derrick Virgil resigned as director of the Multicultural Center.
Senior telecommunications major Jonathan K. McCants said he held a good relationship with the ex-director.
"He had a very strong relationship with students of all races," he said. "And because he was the multicultural adviser, he was also the adviser of many of the multicultural organizations, such as Spectrum and some other minority organizations."
Lovett, assistant director of the multicultural center, said Virgil moved to North Carolina after accepting an offer for the position of director of the writing center at Winston-Salem State University.
"Derrick wanted to experience a different professional opportunity," she said.
Beeler said the forum would be open for students, faculty and staff. He said the candidates would make a presentation on the topic of "Strengthening a University's Multicultural Center by Building Partnerships."
While the candidates present their topic, Beeler will search for characteristics he expects from the new director of the Multicultural Center.
"We are looking for someone who has worked from the prospect of most students and across the university," he said. "Someone who understands working with minority students and is interested in the Multicultural Center."
The open forums for Lovett and Carthell will be Thursday and Nov. 19, respectively, in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Multipurpose Room from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
McCants said he was interested in knowing who the winner will be, even though he did not know who the candidates are.
"I'm actually not so sure about who the candidates are for the director position," he said. "But when I do find out I would like to now how much they will be involved with the students. I definitely will be attending the forum."
