Angel Tree to help families with holidays

Almost twice as many children need help compared to last year

Student Voluntary Services is helping children in the Muncie area have a better Christmas.

The 17th annual Angel Tree begins today and sponsors underprivileged Delaware County children.

Every year SVS and Delaware County Family Services compiles a list of local children in need. This year 175 children will be represented on the tree, almost twice as many as last year.

Kathy Smith, associate director of student life at Ball State University, has worked to organize the Angel Tree project for several years. She said the economy has caused more families to rely on the Angel Tree as a supplement for Christmas gifts this year.

"It's great to serve this many kids," Smith said, "but it also means we need more people to step up and be an angel for a child this year."

The Angel Tree will be in L.A. Pittenger Student Center Room 118 until Dec. 8.

People interested in donating to the cause should stop by to register and select a child's name. SVS is asking each volunteer to purchase three things for the child they are sponsoring - an item of clothing, a toy and a book.

All gifts should be returned unwrapped to Room 118 by Dec. 8.
