Voter registration deadline Monday

County: 3,000 more voters registered than May primary

Monday is the deadline for people to register to vote in the Nov. 4 general election.

Mary Kuzma, clerk for Delaware County's Voter's Registration Office, said the office has counted at least 3,000 more registered voters than the primary in May.

"People are very passionate on both sides," Kuzma said. "I think the headquarters for Barack Obama are on campus, and they're pushing (voter registration) hard."

Ball State University student Shana Greenlee has not missed a chance to vote since she was old enough to register for the democratic privilege.

"Politics are really big in my family," she said. "My grandfather was mayor for eight years. My family would probably skin me if I didn't vote."

While tens of thousands of people have registered in Delaware County already, the office is still expecting a larger pile of registrations Monday.

"I think we'll have a surge, but maybe not as drastic as the primary," Kuzma said.

If a voter registers via mail, the application must be postmarked on Monday by midnight, Kuzma said.

Mike Uehlein, president of University Democrats, said the group was not going to heavily rush registrations during the weekend.

"We're trying to get as many people as we can while they're still on campus," he said. By Saturday and Sunday, really, a lot of people will be off campus."

The student organization has gone into larger classes to register students to vote. Uehlein said the volunteers had gone into more than 50 classrooms since the beginning of the semester.

No one from College Republicans returned messages for this report.
