SGA pursues changes

Student senators continue to work to complete goals

Senators got straight to work during Wednesday's Student Government Association meeting discussing issues they want to fix at Ball State University.

Secretary Ebony Strong reminded senators the SGA October Social would be 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 29 at Cardinal Lanes in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center. Anybody is invited, and in the spirit of Halloween, students are encouraged to dress up, she said.

President Frank Hood also told the senators that around 6 p.m. Saturday in the Lobby of the Letterman Building, two actors from the TV show "Gossip Girls" would be on campus promoting Sen. Barack Obama's campaign.

Below is a review of what was discussed in each caucus and committee:

Caucus Reports

On Campus: Chairwoman Beth Cahill said Cathy Bickel, associate director of Housing and Residence Life, still did not want suggestion boxes in residence halls but said having a suggestion area online would work. Cahill also said the caucus would look into getting the distance between designated parking lines by Studebaker West Complex increased. The caucus also would research putting motion sensors in bathrooms so if the signs encouraging people to turn off the lights were not enough for students to reduce energy consumption, the lights would still turn off.

Off Campus: Whip Aly Tennant said they wanted to look into getting the off-campus newsletter in some format other than an e-mail attachment. With it currently being in an attachment, students are less likely to read it, she said.

Organizational: Chairman Marco Pretell-Vazquez said Spectrum would have a social at Park Hall today. The Panhellenic Council would be electing positions next week, he said.

At Large: Chairwoman Michelle Voss said they would look into the InQsit computer system and seeing if students could have a way to sign out if they finish their tests early to open more slots for students. They also would have an At-Large Reach Out Day every Tuesday where there would be a table in the Atrium so students could ask questions about SGA.

Committee Reports

Academic Affairs: Chairwoman Mallory Winkler said the committee e-mailed Provost Terry King about getting midterm grades online. They said they would try to get it implemented next semester. They also would write legislation for mandatory professor evaluations soon.

Community/Environmental Affairs: Chairwoman Leah Ruble said she talked to Mike Planton, associate director for landscape and environmental management in Facilities Planning and Management, and they got their supplies for the Nov. 8 cleanup day. They would meet at America's Buffett in the LaFollette Complex before cleaning up from 10 a.m. until noon. She said they also would continue looking into getting bat houses around campus, which the committee started researching Spring Semester.

Diversity and Multicultural Affairs: Whip Daniel Morton said they were in the process of getting banquet and catering set up for the Multicultural Forum and seeing what other organizations wanted to get involved.

Governmental Affairs and Student Awareness: The committee was still revising the letter they want to send to congressmen and congresswomen about juicycampus.com. They also discussed other venues than the Student Center to have SGA meetings and other marketing techniques.

Student Safety: Chairwoman Michelle Voss said they would look into people loitering around campus doing tricks on bicycles and causing problems for people walking to classes and meetings.

Student Services: Chairwoman Nicole Akey said she was still in discussions about increasing student fees $5. She also said she talked to Housing and Residence Life about getting Bravo and Fox News on campus, and the committee would talk to Comcast about getting those channels.
