Pi Sigma Epsilon fundraiser promotes mtvU

Fraternity members use project to gain business experience

A Ball State University sales and marketing fraternity has partnered with MTV to promote one of the network's channels on Ball State's campus.

Pi Sigma Epsilon fraternity is working with mtvU - MTV's college-focused station broadcasted on channel 54.

Fraternity President Emily Muzzy said she was contacted by Clubfunding - an MTV partner that helps college organizations develop fundraisers - about a project to earn money for her organization by promoting mtvU on campus.

"It was first come first serve," Muzzy said.

The fraternity received $200 to hang 100 posters, hand out 1,000 flyers and give away 10 goodie bags.

Fraternity members had to document how many posters, flyers and goodie bags they were handing out by taking photos. Muzzy said the photos had to include the promotional material, fraternity members and Ball State students.

The marketing event was Oct. 6 and all photos with a brief summary were uploaded the following day.

She said the process allowed fraternity members to gain promotional experience.

"Talking to Ball State students and convincing them to let us take their picture with the promotional material required our members to break out of their shell and be confident in what they were trying to accomplish," Muzzy said.

Brett Hayes, Pi Sigma Epsilon social chairman and historian, said the mtvU marketing project was a good way to gain experience.

"Being able to sell a product and know how to communicate it effectively will make you very successful in life," Hayes said.

Pi Sigma Epsilon has been contracted to complete two more marketing projects for mtvU.

The first project was completed Monday by taking 50 poster pictures, Muzzy said.

The fraternity will have another promotional event Oct. 20.

Muzzy said the projects will net $500, which the fraternity plans to use to purchase shirts, hats and other gear for the organization. It also plans to send people to a regional competition at Purdue University or to a national competition at Virginia Beach.
