More state troopers on patrol for Halloween

Some local law enforcement agencies will step up their efforts around Delaware County for Halloween weekend.

Sgt. Rod Russell of Indiana State Police's Redkey district said ISP would send extra units to patrol the streets like it does every year for Halloween. He said his main concerns were vandalism and drunk driving. ISP won't have any check points, but the extra patrols will be looking for impaired drivers. People have parties around the holiday and people don't always have designated drivers, he said.

"We don't need any situations when kids are involved and being hit by vehicles," Russell said.

Cpt. Michael Scroggins of the Delaware County Sheriff's Office said extra officers patrolling the unincorporated areas of the county. The sheriff's office does this as a precaution, he said, because it hasn't had a significant amount of problems during past Halloweens, with the exception of the occasional toilet papering or egging.

"As far as serious mischief," Scroggins said, "we've really been fortunate and everyone's behaved themselves."

Other agencies won't be doing anything to increase enforcement this weekend because they haven't had problems in the past.

Cpl. Brian Lang of Indiana State Excise Police said officers would treat the weekend like any other and not send additional force to the Ball State University area.

He said he thought cold weather had an affect on the amount of foot traffic during Halloween and this year will be cold.

The University Police Department won't increase its efforts either.

Associate Director of Public Safety Robert Fey said the department had no reason to treat this weekend different than any other.

"Traditionally, Halloween on campus or around the campus area has not been problematic," he said.

The Muncie Police Department couldn't be reached for comment.
